Foreign Case Law Translation Services in the UK — Citable in English Proceedings
In an English court, foreign law is proved as a fact, and the authorities behind that proof have to be readable, verifiable and quotable. We translate judgments, codes and commentary so counsel can cite a paragraph, a judge can find the source, and the other side’s expert cannot pick the rendering apart.

A citation list is enough. We will tell you which judgments actually need translating.
Who We Provide Foreign Case Law Translation For in the UK
Foreign case law arrives in an English matter for one of two reasons: the contract chose a foreign law, or somebody is asking the court to look at how another system decided the same question. Both need the authority itself, not a summary of it.
Barristers & Counsel
The person who will actually stand up and cite it. If a paragraph number has moved or a term has drifted, that is discovered at the worst possible moment.
Litigation Solicitors
Teams running a claim with a foreign governing law clause, usually assembling authorities alongside a wider litigation translation instruction.
Foreign Law Experts
The expert commissions much of this work directly. They cite the authority; we render it into English that matches the terminology already used in their report.
Arbitration Counsel & Tribunals
Seat law, applicable law and prior awards, often in three different languages within the same reference, and often with a tribunal that reads two of them.
In-house Legal Teams
Companies with contracts governed by a foreign law who need to understand a decision that has just changed the position under it.
Insolvency & Restructuring
Recognition and assistance applications where a foreign court’s reasoning, not just its order, has to be put before the English court.
Immigration Practitioners
Foreign court and constitutional decisions used as country evidence, feeding into the material covered on our Immigration Tribunal page.
Academics & Law Schools
Comparative research and teaching material, where the requirement is faithful rendering with the original terminology visible throughout.
Foreign Judgments, Codes and Commentary We Translate
In English practice these sources are collectively called authorities — the judgments, code provisions and commentary a party asks the court to rely on. A foreign law argument is rarely built on judgments alone: it leans on the code provision the court applied, the commentary the expert relies on, and sometimes a headnote written by an editor rather than the court.
Once the authorities are assembled into a paginated authorities bundle, page-matched delivery matters too — that is covered on our evidence bundle translation page. Foreign judgments being enforced rather than cited are handled under court order translation.
Foreign Case Law Translation — Before & After Examples
Three jurisdictions, three different ways a judgment can be broken in translation: the citation, the operative part, and the doctrinal term at the heart of the reasoning.
BGH, Urteil vom 12. Mai 2021 – VIII ZR 45/19, Rn. 27: Der Vermieter verletzt seine Verkehrssicherungspflicht, wenn er trotz Kenntnis eines Mangels über mehrere Monate keine Abhilfe schafft.
Federal Court of Justice (Bundesgerichtshof), judgment of 12 May 2021, case no. VIII ZR 45/19, para. 27: A landlord breaches his duty to maintain safety (Verkehrssicherungspflicht) where, despite knowledge of a defect, he takes no remedial action over a period of several months.
PAR CES MOTIFS, la Cour casse et annule, mais seulement en ce qu’il a condamné la société X au paiement de la somme de 42 000 euros, l’arrêt rendu le 3 février 2022, entre les parties, par la cour d’appel de Lyon.
ON THESE GROUNDS, the Court quashes and sets aside, but only in so far as it ordered company X to pay the sum of EUR 42,000, the judgment given on 3 February 2022, between the parties, by the Lyon Court of Appeal.
STS 456/2022, de 14 de junio, ECLI:ES:TS:2022:2345, FJ 4.º: La buena fe contractual impone al acreedor un deber de lealtad que no se agota en el cumplimiento literal de lo pactado.
Supreme Court (Tribunal Supremo) judgment 456/2022 of 14 June, ECLI:ES:TS:2022:2345, legal ground 4: Contractual good faith (buena fe) imposes on the creditor a duty of loyalty that is not exhausted by literal performance of what was agreed.
Extracts are illustrative. Case numbers, parties and identifiers shown are invented to demonstrate handling and do not refer to real decisions.
What Must Never Be Changed When Translating Foreign Case Law
On most legal documents the job is to render everything. On a judgment it is not. Several things have to survive untouched, and a translator who improves them has quietly made the authority harder to use.
Citations are addresses, not text
VIII ZR 45/19, nº 19-24.567, ECLI:ES:TS:2022:2345. These exist so somebody can find the decision. Translated, reformatted or tidied, they stop working, and a judge who cannot locate the source will not rely on it.
Court names carry hierarchy
Rendering the Bundesgerichtshof or the Cour de cassation simply as ‘the Supreme Court’ imports an English hierarchy that does not map. We give an English description and keep the original alongside it.
Doctrinal terms travel with the original
Culpa in contrahendo, ordre public, buona fede. A one-word English substitution smuggles in an English concept. The term is rendered and the original retained so the expert can be held to a single meaning.
Paragraph numbers are how counsel cites
Marginal numbers, Randnummern, fundamentos jurídicos, numbered considérants. If the English loses them, nobody can pinpoint, and the authority becomes background reading instead of evidence.
A headnote is not the court speaking
Editorial summaries in the official reports are written by publishers, not judges. They are useful and they are translated, but they are labelled as headnotes so they are never quoted as the court’s own words.
A translator resolves language, not law
Where a passage is genuinely ambiguous in the original, it stays ambiguous in the English and comes back as a translator’s note. Resolving it would be giving an opinion on foreign law, which is the expert’s job and not ours.
Foreign Case Law Translation for Expert Reports on Foreign Law
In English proceedings, foreign law is proved by expert evidence, and the authorities are exhibits to that evidence. That makes the expert our real counterpart on this work, whoever is paying the invoice.
Scoping the pinpoint extract
A ninety-page judgment where four paragraphs matter does not need ninety pages translated. We work from your expert’s pinpoints and translate around them, with enough context that the passage is not read out of shape.
A glossary agreed before we start
Key doctrinal terms are settled with the expert at the outset. It takes twenty minutes and it prevents the report and the authorities behind it saying two different things.
Terminology matched to the report
If the report calls it ‘pre-contractual liability’, the authority does too. Nothing undermines an expert faster than an exhibit that uses a different English word for the concept being explained.
Back-check before certification
The translated extract goes to your expert for a terminology check before it is certified. They are the one who has to defend it, so they see it first.
General information about how this material is used, not legal advice. How foreign law should be pleaded and proved in your case is a matter for the solicitor and counsel conducting it.
Certified Translation of Foreign Judgments for UK Proceedings
An authority is usually an exhibit rather than a filed document, so what matters most is that the reader can trace the English back to a specific reported text. Our certificate records exactly which one.
Certified extract or judgment
A signed statement naming the translator, their qualifications and the language pair, confirming the English corresponds to the reported text, with the citation of the source recorded on the certificate itself.
Exhibit-ready formatting
Delivered so it can be exhibited to an expert report or dropped into an authorities bundle, with the original text available alongside where the parties want to work from both.
Translator’s statement for evidence
Where the accuracy of a rendering may be disputed, the translator’s statement can be given in a form suitable to be put before the court, or sworn where a matter calls for it.
Foreign Case Law Translation Across 100+ Languages
Legal language is jurisdiction-specific before it is language-specific. Austrian and German judgments share a language and diverge on terminology, and the same is true of Portugal and Brazil, or Spain and Argentina.

We match linguists to the legal system, not only the language. Where a jurisdiction is outside our regular coverage we say so and source a specialist rather than treating it as a general translation job.
Need Foreign Case Law Translated Before a UK Hearing?
Send the citation and the paragraphs counsel intends to rely on. A pinpoint extract can often be turned around the same day, with the full judgment following if it is still wanted.
Confidential Foreign Case Law Translation for UK Legal Teams
The authority itself may be freely reported, but which paragraphs you have pinpointed, and why, is strategy. That is the part we treat as confidential, and it is the part most suppliers never think about.
Why UK Law Firms Choose Our Foreign Case Law Translation Service
Six reasons, and none of them is fluency. Fluency is the entry requirement on this work, not the differentiator.
Linguists matched to the legal system
Not just a German speaker. Someone who knows how a German judgment is structured, what a Leitsatz is, and why the Tenor is not the reasoning.
Citations and pinpoints survive intact
Case numbers, ECLI identifiers, reporter references and paragraph numbering come through unchanged, so counsel can cite and the court can verify.
We work with your expert, not around them
Glossary agreed up front, terminology matched to the report, and a back-check with the expert before anything is certified.
Pinpoint extracts as a first option
We will suggest translating four paragraphs rather than ninety pages when that is what the argument actually needs. It is a smaller invoice and a better exhibit.
Independent second-linguist revision
Every certified authority is revised by a second qualified linguist, with citations, figures and numbering checked against the reported source.
We do not resolve ambiguity for you
Where the original is genuinely open to two readings, you get a translator’s note, not a quiet decision made on your behalf by someone with no standing to make it.
Our Foreign Case Law Translation Process, Step by Step
Six steps, and the second one usually halves the bill. Deciding what does not need translating is the most valuable conversation on this service.
Send the citation list
Citations alone are enough to quote. We locate the reported text, confirm which version you want worked from, and flag anything that exists in more than one official form.
Agree the scope with your expert
Full judgment, or the paragraphs the argument turns on. This conversation is where most of the cost is decided, and it takes one exchange.
Glossary before translation
Doctrinal terms settled with the expert, including which ones keep the original alongside the English. Agreed once, applied to every authority in the set.
Translation by a jurisdiction-matched linguist
Structure preserved, numbering preserved, citations untouched. Headnotes labelled as headnotes and any dissent marked as separate.
Independent revision and citation check
A second linguist revises, then citations, case numbers, identifiers and paragraph numbers are checked character by character against the reported source.
Expert back-check, then certification
The set goes to your expert for a terminology check, and only then is it certified and delivered in exhibit-ready form.
Foreign Case Law Translation Cost in the UK
Judgments vary enormously in length and hardly at all in what is actually cited. Pricing reflects that: extracts are priced per authority, full judgments per page, and sets are quoted as one.
Pinpoint Extract
The paragraphs the argument turns on
Full Judgment
The whole decision, start to finish
Authorities Set
For a full foreign law expert report
Rates are per standard page of 250 words. Where the same authority is cited in more than one report or submission, it is translated and charged once and reused across the matter.
Foreign Case Law Translation Case Studies
Parties and citations are held back. The jurisdictions, the volumes and the way the work was scoped are not.
German Authorities — Commercial Court
A contract governed by German law, with an expert relying on eleven decisions running to several hundred pages between them. Only the pinpointed reasoning was needed, under one agreed glossary.
Cassation Judgment — Arbitration
A French Cour de cassation decision central to a jurisdiction challenge, where the partial nature of the quashing was the entire point and had been lost in the other side's version.
Spanish Line of Authority — Enforcement
A series of Tribunal Supremo judgments relied on in a recognition application, needing ECLI identifiers and legal-ground numbering intact so the court could verify each one.
Foreign Case Law Translation Service Reviews From UK Clients
Feedback from counsel, solicitors and the foreign law experts whose reports these authorities sit behind.
"They kept the paragraph numbering, which sounds obvious until you have been handed a translation where it is gone and you are due to open in the morning."
"The glossary conversation with my expert took twenty minutes and removed an entire category of cross-examination risk."
"As the expert, I am the one who has to defend the English. Being shown it before certification rather than after is the whole difference."
"They suggested translating six paragraphs instead of the full judgment and were right. The invoice was a fraction of what I had budgeted."
"A partial quashing had been rendered as a total one by our previous supplier. Their version made the distinction obvious on the first read."
"Citations came back untouched and every ECLI resolved first time. That is not a given, and it should be."

Foreign Case Law Translation at Every Stage of a UK Case
Translation touches the middle three of these five, and the decisions made at stage two determine what the work costs at stage three.
Pleading foreign law
Foreign law has to be raised, not assumed. Once it is pleaded, the authorities behind it stop being background reading and start being evidence.
Instructing the expert
The expert identifies the decisions the opinion will rest on. This is the cheapest moment to scope translation, and the one most often missed.
Translating the authorities
Extracts or full judgments, under a shared glossary, with the terminology matched to the report they will be exhibited to.
Into the authorities bundle
Translations are paginated with everything else, and from that point the page numbers matter as much as the words on them.
Cited at the hearing
Counsel pinpoints a paragraph, the judge turns to it, and either the numbering and the citation hold up or the authority quietly loses its force.

UK Court Translations is a language services provider, not a firm of solicitors and not an expert on foreign law. Nothing on this page is legal advice, and how foreign law should be pleaded and proved is a matter for the solicitor and counsel conducting your case.
